CALVARY

The Calvary, consisting of the Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross, and 14 chapels standing on the Way of the Cross, was constructed during the years 1858 to 1860. The external appearance of the Way of the Cross is a distinctive town landmark. The original idea for the construction came from the initiative of the town´s Roman Catholic priests, Ján Nepomuk Záhora, Andrej Kučma and other believers from the Ružomberok parish. The church, built in the classical style was renovated in 1902 to 1903, and then again between 1947 and 1948. The internal decorations were designed by Valér Aurel Zavarský and the embossed carvings are the work of František Gibala. The interior was enriched in 1959 by mural paintings from Mikuláš Klimčák. This original simple sacral construction conceived in a classical spirit, is a place of pilgrimage, and a part of the spiritual history of Ružomberok.
