The War Memorial

The memorial, which was commissioned by the village in honour of its fellow citizens, was created by the sculptor Vojtech Ihriský. He started working on it during the middle of the 1930s, but the memorial only took its final, current shape after WWII. Standing in the central area of the Square of Fallen Heroes (Námestie padlých hrdinov), the memorial and its stone relief depict three life-size standing figures – a soldier in uniform wearing a helmet and holding a rifle, and a woman in village dress and a small boy saying goodbye to the soldier. On each side of the relief is a stone tablet bearing the names of residents of the village who gave their lives in WWI and WWII. The memorial is situated on an elliptical base enclosed by a two-step curb. In the centre of the base, below the relief, is a grave ledger with a raised Latin cross. As a monumental memorial work, it has been declared a National Heritage Site.
