NATIVE HOUSE OF ANDREJ HLINKA

On 27 September 1864 Andrej Hlinka, a priest, a nationalist and a politician whose life motto was: “All for God and for the nation!” was born in this house. The exhibition in three rooms of his native house does not only include his furniture, priestly clothes, personal items, but also info-panels with photographs of Hlinka’s life, documents and manuscripts. His wax statue and death mask made out by the sculptor Fraňo Štefunko from Martin make present the personality and great charisma of a man whose name could not be mentioned for more than forty years, not even in his native village. All exhibited items help to feel the time in which he lived. One can hear his perfect Slovak and determination in his voice on a gramophone recording, which unveils why he enjoyed such trust among the Slovak nation that he always cared about. Slovaks have always felt to be a nation and Andrej Hlinka was their true leader and father of the nation. In his time he was a natural authority for the oppressed Slovak nation, and it was his desire to cement and unite it.
